   I don’t think you grasp the whole issue. Yes there’s a sense of danger in unsafe sex ang yes us older gays remember a time before AIDS (though in my case I remember the first issues which came up when I was coming out) but I think its more than that. Many of the people getting into unsafe sex are people who think that AIDs doesn’t kill so why bother. I’ve noticed that its hitting a whole lot of younger men also. And that’s not dealing with bug chasers or …. Its been happening for a long time. You only have to see a show of Queer as Folk to realize that condomless parties have been happening for a long time (I think the episode was from season 2).

   I’ve been thinking about this and I still can not come up with anything, any reason other than people being self-destructive. I recently saw a movie called ‘Gay Sex in the 70s’ visit - http://www.gaysexinthe70s.com - a documentary about gay life and sex in NYC pre Aids. Very insightful movie. Sure sex without a condom feels like no other, but I choose life over an orgazim or two!!

   Hmm…

   So I’ve been thinking about this for quite some time. I myself have never been to a sex party, and I don’t think that it is something that I’ll be doing anytime soon. Anyhow, the fact that participants are not permitted to wear condoms is a horrible thing until you sit back and realize that they are not forced to attend.

   I also think that some of the main points of these parties are the anonmity paired with the fantasy. In a park or a bathroom (eww by the way), you see the person, and you have the opportunity of seeing and recognizing the person again. Could this here create an attachment of emotions from one partner while the other was just looking for fun? This could, in some cases, lead to unprepaird ‘outings,’ or even worse, stalking and harassment. One step further is death! I mean, think of all the prostitues that go missing in a year?

   Another point is the profit in the situation. Suppose a man was expelled from his home and his friends because of being gay, and he’s forced to survive on the streets. Keep in mind this is all hypothetical, he then turns to someone looking to give him a hand. Drug dealers, whore-houses, or honest to good people that are just having a hard time surviving. He could risk himself selling drugs. One night he finds a couple having sex in an ally. He offer’s his bed for a couple of bucks, he may even participate. ‘Hmm? This was the best 20 bucks I ever made?’ He then spreds the word, and bang! Sex party. Tells his crew, and they host, and then their friends host, and suddenly it’s a fad.

   So who is to blame here? Participants? Hosts? This here reminds me mostly of supervised underaged drinking really. “My kid’s gonna drink anyway, might as well do it in the safety of the home.” “These people will be irrisponsible, might as well make sure they leave safely.”

   Feel free to disagree, this is just what I keep thinking about.

   I have been HIV positive for over 20 years now. As part of that older generation, from the coming out in the Bay area in the 70’s, era. My first boyfriend loved sex, loved attention and admiration from strangers, which was sometimes perceived as love, AIDS won. But I think if he had the option to use condoms as a precaution, he might not have wanted to. He was still dealing with many issues about self worth and his place in society. He came from rural Montana to the Bay area to discover himself and took a path of that was centered on some pretty self-destructive behavior.
   At the time I was moving in a different direction. If what we know about HIV was available then I think I’d still be the same person and condoms would still be part of my casual sex life. But I am a serial monogamist. Preprogrammed to be in a relationship and I have had a series of long term relationships with brief bouts of unfulfilling casual sex in between.
   Sometimes the message I get as a “long term survivor” appears to be one of hero worship. Words like brave and lucky and survivor are used by others to describe their perception of what is just my biological ability to not get sick. As an observer to that kind of place, maybe some kids what to be HIV positive. Like becoming an alcoholic to someday quit and become recovered.
   I personally don’t understand why anyone would want to take the decision to become HIV positive. I speak of my very old virus as one of my longest relationships.
   In a world where there is very little power available to feel as if an individual can rise to success perhaps the thought of being one of the lucky one- like the people who still smoke or drink, knowing that it’s slowly killing their body, live for the joy and hope that perhaps they’ll be one of the lucky ones.
   Dodging the HIV bullet, what a lottery.

   BBFFw/Chem is the new tag line on many gay mens GAYDAR profiles recently - what’s it mean - in case you don’t know it means: bareback, fist fucking orgy on drugs( mda,gbl,ghb,coke & e) and it’s rampant in the UK.

   It’s affluent white males, latinos & blacks that are all willing to participate in the sexual Russian roulette every weekend. These men know the risks involved, they are educated not ignorant, yet they continue to practice un-safe sex regularly.

   They are from all walks of life and all ages, they have nothing & everything in common…they are being DEFIANT!

   They don’t want to be told what to do in bed - they get enough orders on a daily basis. They’re saying “FUCK YOU, I’LL DO WHAT I WANT” regardless of the risks involved.

   They believe that anti-retroviral therapy is a cure for HIV/Aids - if they get it , they can take a pill and it will all be okay. Pills alleviate the pressure of live their daily lives so 4 or 5 more a day won’t hurt.

   I don’t know why it’s happening but it’s happening everywhere! Is this just another step along the road to self destruction?

   We all have choices to make in our lives but when those choices put other peoples lives in jeopardy it’s just being selfish. The solution is to insist on condoms all of the time.

   NO FUCK IS WORTH YOUR LIFE!

   In ref to the point about older guys cruising parks, toilets etc…this is where these men came out sexually and where they feel comfortable. Not all of us were able to grow up with Will & Grace and Brokeback Mountain on our screens or had LGBT support. Give them a break

   I just have a couple short comments. First, I have never, ever heard of anyone around my age (20ish) being involved in one of these ‘parties’ or anything similar. Second, I think that because most of the guys around here (in orange county, socal) are so pretentious, that they’d be too scared to not use a condom. I mean, who wants to be looked at condescendingly for having a disease? Not them.. or anyone really.

   Second, the ‘thrilling’ sex (outdoors, bathrooms).. nobody I know does that, so I think you’re correct. I have heard from a few older friends that they’ve experienced that.

   Last, I would go to every no-condom sex party and smack em in the face!

   I’ve always been a fan of your project, this is my 2 cents:

   I’m a black 30 somthing male from the UK and I can’t get this through my head that anyone would flirt with their mortality so willingly. Especially when drugs are involved, which in the long term must fuck up yourself worth to a point where a fantasy is worth more than you life!

   I’ve just come across a gay black porn trailer which boasts “14 black dicks and no comdoms” what a freak show!

   Is this a perpetuation of an ultra straight masculine fantasy? Acting out how straight acting these gay boys can be, by men who think they are straight and therefore at low risk some how to HIV.

   May be the ‘thug’ love thing is the next step as black men are thought to be the toughest out there and willing to defy the norms.

   As someone said earlier it is quite common to see Gaydar profiles with ‘chem friendly’ and ‘bb’ somehow incorporated into the ID. But these guys are mixed nationalities in the UK.

   I’m sure you will find a mix of people acting out this fantasy in the US if you stratched a little beneath the surface.

    These types of parties will never be going away. Danger and sex can be a very powerful combination and people (gay or straight) will always seek out that thrill. I can’t speak from personal experience, but the guys I know that attend these parties are both white and black and all of them are very educated (one of them is a doctor). They are not ignorant of the risks, it is the risk creates the thrill for them.

    As far as the age thing my friends who do this are in their late 30’s and 40’s. I don’ t know guys in their 20’s who go, but those guys do bb. From my experience it is not the risk that is the draw for the younger guys. They just don’t think HIV will happen to them and if it does they just figure it won’t really effect their life because of the drugs available now. Few if any of them know someone whose life was devistated by the disease.

    Personally, I’m 35. I’m old enough to still feel some of the fear of AIDS because of what I saw happening 10-15 years ago. That fear keeps me from going to these parties, but at the same time I understand the draw and get why men go. I also know I can’t convince my friends not to go. I have tried. They are not ignorant and knowingly take the risks.
